Before your team can connect

Pinterest developer app. Apps start in trial access, limited to the owner's account, until Pinterest approves standard access.

Limitations to know about

  • Every Pin needs an image. Video Pins are not supported from the composer.

How a post becomes a Pin

The first line of the caption becomes the Pin title (up to 100 characters) and the rest becomes the description (up to 500 characters in PostRoost). The post’s link becomes the Pin’s destination, and the image’s alt text goes with it. Choose the board per post; without a choice, the account’s first board is used.

Requirements and limits

New Pinterest developer apps start with trial access, which only works for the app owner’s own account, until Pinterest approves standard access. Every Pin needs an image; video Pins are not supported from the composer.

A tip for shops

Tag each Pin’s destination link with campaign parameters so your web analytics can tell Pinterest traffic apart. The free UTM builder does it in a few seconds.

Frequently asked questions

10 questions

How does a post become a Pin?

The first line of the caption becomes the Pin title (up to 100 characters) and the rest the description (up to 500 in PostRoost). The post's link becomes the destination, and the image's alt text goes with it.

Can I choose the board?

Yes, per post. Without a choice, the account's first board is used.

Can I pin to several boards at once?

Each post goes to one board. To use the same image on another board, schedule a second post for that board.

Can I schedule video Pins?

Not from the composer. Every Pin needs an image.

Can a Pin have several images?

No. Pinterest takes one image per Pin from PostRoost; for several images, schedule several Pins.

Why can only the app owner connect Pinterest?

New Pinterest developer apps start with trial access, which only works for the app owner's own account, until Pinterest approves standard access.

Should every Pin have a link?

Yes, ideally to the exact page the image is about. Tag it with the UTM builder so your web analytics can tell Pinterest visits apart.

Do hashtags matter on Pinterest?

People find Pins through search, so a descriptive title and description do more work than hashtags. A few relevant ones at most.

Which Pinterest numbers come back?

Impressions, clicks and saves per Pin.

What if a Pin fails?

It appears in the Actions list with the reason, for example a missing image or no board found on the account. Fix it and retry.
