Before your team can connect
X developer app. The X API is pay-per-usage: the operator of the deployment buys API credits, and posts that contain a URL are billed at a higher rate.
Limitations to know about
Long-form posts beyond 280 characters are not supported.
Counting to 280
X does not count every character the same way: every link counts as 23 characters however long it is, and emoji and many non-Latin characters count as two. The X tab in the composer shows your remaining space; our free character counter applies the same rules if you are drafting elsewhere.
The first reply
Add a first comment and PostRoost posts it as a reply to your post straight after publishing. It is a good place for the link, so the main post gets the room.
Behind the scenes: API costs
The X API is pay-per-use for the operator of the app, and posts that contain a link cost more to publish than plain text posts. This does not change your PostRoost price, but it is one reason links work well in the first reply.
Frequently asked questions
10 questions
How does X count the 280 characters?
X uses a weighted count: every link counts as 23 characters however long it is, and emoji and many non-Latin characters count as two. The X tab in the composer shows the space you have left.
What media can I attach to an X post?
Up to four images or one video, with alt text for each image.
What is the first reply?
Add a first comment and PostRoost posts it as a reply to your post straight after publishing. It is a good place for a link or extra context, and it is included from the Essentials plan.
Can I schedule a thread?
Not a thread of several posts. You can schedule one post plus one reply through the first comment.
Can I write posts longer than 280 characters?
No. PostRoost uses X's standard 280-character limit for every account.
Does PostRoost shorten my links?
No. X counts every link as 23 characters whatever its length, so a long tracking link costs no extra space.
Do links cost more to publish?
The X API is pay-per-use for the operator of the app, and posts with a link cost more to publish than plain text. It does not change your PostRoost price.
Which numbers come back from X?
Impressions, likes, replies, reposts and bookmarks per post, and the account's follower count.
What happens if X refuses a post?
Temporary errors are retried automatically with increasing gaps. A post X refuses outright goes to the Actions list with X's message, so you can change it and retry.
Do X connections expire?
X access tokens are short-lived, and PostRoost renews them automatically with the refresh token granted at sign-in. If access is revoked, reconnect the account; its history is kept.
